1792년 Matthew Gloag& Son사의 설립자인 Matthew Gloag는 와인 식품상의 딸과 결혼하여, 장인의 사업을
물려 받았습니다.
그는 스코틀랜드의 증류소로 부터 많은 몰트 위스키를 사 들였으며, 그의 술 저장 창고의 명성은 날로 쌓여갔습니다.
1842년 빅토리아 여왕이 Perth를 방문했을때 Matthew Gloag가 왕실연회의 와인납품을 위하여 초대되었습니다.
1860년 Matthew Gloag의 아들 Wiliam이 사업을 인수 받고, 블랜디드 위스키 사업에 뛰어 들었습니다.

이 브랜드는 당시 사냥철 시즌이 되면 Perth에 찾아오는 사냥꾼들을 끌기위하여 스코틀랜드에서 가장 인기있는
사냥감이었던 Grouse(뇌조)를 브랜드로 출시 하였습니다.
초기 병 라벨의 뇌조 모습은 Matthew Gloag의 딸이었던 Philippa가 그린 그림이 유명한 트레이드 마크가 되었습니다.
후에 그의 예상은 적중하였고, 이 술은 점차 유명해졌습니다.
그런 연유로 유명한 이라는 의미의 Famous가 브랜드 앞에 붙어 Famouse Grouse라는 이름으로 변경되었습니다.

Highland Distilleries는 페이머스 그라우스를 증진시킬 여러 요소들을 갖고 있었으며, 주변 상황도 유리했습니다.
(당시 EUC에서 Johnnie Walker의 브랜드를 유럽 시장에서 철수 시켰습니다).
John Macphail의 뛰어난 리더쉽 아래 스코틀랜드 시장의 탑을 목표로 하여, 10년 동안 스코틀랜드 시장에서 두배로 성장

1980년 ~ 1997년 까지 스코틀랜드 시장에서 가장 많이 팔리는 브랜드였으며, 기존 메이저급 블랜디드 위스키가
판매율이 감소되는 것과 반대로, 메이저급 블랜디드 위스키 제품으로는 유일하게 시장 점유율을 증가 시켰습니다.
스카치 위스키는 최고의 품질에 도달하는 시점이 모든 위스키마다 다릅니다.
때문에, 페이머스 그라우스는 가장 넓은 범위의 선택에서 각기 다른 위스키들이 절정에 도달되는 시점의 원액만을
선택하여 블랜딩함으로써 최고의 품질을 만들어 냅니다.
위스키의 생산에 있어서 가장 중요한 점은, 얼마나 오래 숙성을 시켰는가 보다는, 어떤 통에서 숙성을 시켰는지가 더
중요합니다.
Famous Grouse에 사용되는 원액은 대부분 최고 품질의 Sherry Cask에서 숙성 시킨 몰트 위스키가 사용되었으며,
그 중의 많은 비율은 처음 재사용(first fill)한 통 속에서 숙성된 원액을 사용하여, 매우 풍부한 풍미를 선보입니다.
페이머스 그라우스에 사용되는 몰트 위스키의 비율은 35%이며, 핵심몰트위스키는 Highland Park, Tamdhu,
Macallan. Glenturret (스코틀랜드에서 가장 오랜 증류소) 등의 몰트 위스키가 사용되었습니다.
나머지 65%의 그레인 위스키는 North British와 Cambus가 사용되었습니다.
1999년 부터 여러 증류소에서 동일한 년도에 증류한 Vintage Whisky들을 블렌딩한 Vatted Malt Vintage Whisky와,
10년, 12년, 15년, 18년, 21년, 30년 숙성 Malt Whisky들을 생산하고 있습니다.
1. Famous Grouse 스카치 위스키 소개
The Famous Grouse is a brand of blended Scotch whisky, first produced by Matthew Gloag & Son Ltd. in 1897,
and now produced by The Edrington Group.
The malt whiskies used in The Famous Grouse blend include The Glenrothes, Highland Park Single Malt and
Macallan Single Malt.
Its emblem is the Red Grouse
1) History
Matthew Gloag was grocer and wine merchant in Perth, Scotland. Gloag purchased whiskies from distilleries
around Scotland, and when Queen Victoria visited Perth in 1842, he was invited to supply the wines for the
royal banquet.
In 1860 his son William Gloag took over the company and began producing blended whiskies.
In 1896 William's son Matthew, named after his grandfather, took over the company.
He created The Grouse Brand blend in 1897, which was later renamed "The Famous Grouse".
In 1970 the still family owned Matthew Gloag & Son Ltd. company was sold to Highland Distillers,
after the chairman Matthew Frederick Gloag died.
2) Royal banquet
Like so many early whisky companies, Matthew Gloag & Son Ltd., has its origins in the early
19th century, when the founder established himself as a grocer and wine merchant in Perth.
Matthew Gloag bought malt whiskies from distilleries around Scotland and built up a reputation for his cellars.
When Queen Victoria visited the town in 1842, Gloag was invited to supply the wines for the royal banquet.
3) The Grouse Brand
In 1860 his son William took over the company and began to add blended whiskies to the range of drinks
offered by the firm, then in 1896 William's son, another Matthew, who had worked in the wine trade in Bordeaux,
took over the running of the business.
He created a blend in 1897 which was first called The Grouse Brand.
This became so well known around Perth that the name was justifiably changed to the Famous Grouse.
In the 1920s small overseas markets were established, and in 1936 the company built a bottling plant and
bonded warehouse in Perth, but the Famous Grouse's following remained mainly local until the 1960s,
when it began to win a following in Glasgow and the Central Belt of Scotland.
4) Highland Distilleries
The company was still entirely owned by the Gloag family, but in 1970 both Matthew Frederick Gloag
(the Chairman) and his wife died, and the family was hit by punitive death duties.
A friendly buyer was sought to secure the future of the company, and the obvious choice was
Highland Distilleries, from whom Gloags bought many of their whiskies.
Highland had the resources to promote The Famous Grouse, and conditions favoured them. Under the able
leadership of John Macphail, and aiming for the top end of the market in Scotland, the brand doubled
its sales within the home market during the decade (to about one million cases), and achieved the same
performance overseas during the I980s.
It has been the best-selling blended whisky brand in Scotland since 1980.
5) Trivia
The Famous Grouse is the best selling whisky in Scotland.
It is supported by a series of award winning television adverts featuring "Gilbert", named after the rugby ball
manufacturer.
The Famous Grouse was the primary sponsor of the Scotland national rugby union team from 1990 until 2007.
The Famous Grouse is the drink of choice for several characters in The Corps, a series of novels by W. E. B. Griffin.
In 2007 a peated special version of The Famous Grouse called The Black Grouse developed for the Swedish
market was released.
Along with Coca-Cola, The Famous Grouse has become known in the United Kingdom for focusing a great deal of
its advertising at Christmas.
