Johnnie Walker - Blended Scotch Whisky

Johnnie Walker is a world famous brand of Scotch whisky produced in Kilmarnock, Scotland

by Diageo plc.

Johnnie Walker continues to be blended in Kilmarnock, with a large plant just north of the

town's railway station.

The historic bonded warehouses and company offices (now local authority) can still be seen

in Strand Street and John Finnie Street.

Johnnie Walker is currently the most widely distributed brand of Scotch whisky in the world,

sold in almost every country and with yearly sales of over 120 million bottles.

Originally known as Walker's Kilmarnock Whisky, the brand is a legacy left by John ‘Johnnie’

Walker after he started to sell whisky in his grocer’s shop in Ayrshire, Scotland.

The brand became popular, but it was his son Alexander Walker and grandson Alexander

Walker II who were largely responsible for establishing the whisky as a widely popular brand.

Walker died in 1857, but his legacy was assured as the Walker family developed the business

and grew the Johnnie Walker brand to become world famous.

Alexander Walker first introduced the iconic square bottle in 1870.

The other identifying characteristic of the bottle is the label, which is applied at an angle of 24

degrees.

In 1908, when James Stevenson was the Managing Director, there was a rebranding of sorts.

The whisky was renamed from Walker's Kilmarnock Whiskies to Johnnie Walker Whisky.

In addition, the slogan, "Born 1820 – Still going Strong!" was created, along with the Striding

Man, a figure used in their advertisements for around fifty years.

Commercial artist Tom Browne created an image of a man wearing a red coat with tails, a top

hat, quizzing glass (or monocle) and Hessian boots, and carrying a cane.

It was created in the likeness of company founder John Walker.

Prior to 1860 it was illegal to blend malt and grain whisky.

During that time John Walker sold a number of whiskys—notably his own Walker’s Kilmarnock.

In 1865 John’s son Alexander produced their first blend, Walker’s Old Highland.

From 1906–1909 John’s grandsons George and Alexander II expanded the line and

introduced the color names.

They dropped Johnnie Walker White during World War I.

In 1932, Alexander II added Johnnie Walker Swing to the line.

Johnnie Walker Red Label - a premium blend of grain whisky and malt whisky, it is the best

selling whisky in the world and the only Johnnie Walker product marketed with mixing in mind.

Johnnie Walker Black Label - A deep and complex flavor which is also an unquestionable

mark of power and refinement.

It is a luxury blend and a luxury brand, with a completely individual personality.

As many as 40 whiskies, each aged 12 years or more, make up this satisfyingly complex blend.

Johnnie Walker Swing - named for the distinctive bottle, in which an irregular bottom allows it

to rock back and forth.

It was Alexander II’s last blend (gold & blue were based on his notes), and is very rare in the

States.

Johnnie Walker Green Label - Blended only from single malts, around fifteen in total each

aged 15 years or more, which include its four signature malts TALISKER™,

CRAGGANMORE™, LINKWOOD™ and CAOL ILA™.

The JOHNNIE WALKER masters of blending concentrate on the keynote flavors in these malts to

create the distinctive taste of GREEN LABEL.

Talisker™ an explosion of wood smoke, pepper, oak and rich fruit.

Cragganmore™ a balance of sweet fruits, dry, nutty oak and light smoke.

Linkwood™ a mixture of exotic notes from fruits, flowers and cedarwood.

Caol Ila™ a combination of rich fruits, drying sea salt and peaty smoke.

Johnnie Walker Gold Label - A skilful fusion of rare aged whiskies inspired by the notes

originally kept by Sir Alexander Walker, and crafted from only a small number of Scotland's

most renowned distilleries each matured for a minimum of 18 years.

The golden whisky, a truly inspired blend that has at its heart the rare Clynelish™ malt, distilled

from spring water which runs through veins of pure gold, to create a magical taste, rich soft and

lingering.

One sip reveals honey tones balanced with almonds and spices, leading to a distinctive

creaminess and the most delightful smooth finish.

The true hedonists of the world freeze their Gold Label™ for 24 hours to release its light fruity

flavours and true honey sweetness, as the whisky warms in the mouth.

Other whiskies either lack these distinctive light characters or have flavors that can be

overpowering when suddenly released, for example strong woody or smoky characters.

Johnnie Walker Blue Label - The rarest and most expensive blend.

Created from the rarest and most expensive whiskies in the world, Blue Label™ has the

authentic character and flavor of a traditional nineteenth century blend, just like those that John

Walker and his son Alexander developed for their most valued customers.

Blue Label™ is made from a few exceptional whiskies with powerful flavors.

Each bottle is so precious it is individually numbered.

Each contains a rare taste and gives an intense experience.

Blue Label™ is the ultimate luxury Scotch Whisky and supplies of Blue Label™ are limited by

the rarity and expense of the whiskies used in the blend.

At the heart of Blue Label™ is Royal Lochnagar™a rare malt distilled near Balmoral,

the Queen's holiday home.

Around 15 other mature and precious whiskies are added to balance Blue Label™ perfectly

- 'a blend that cannot be beat' (Alexander Walker, 1888).
